Artwork Information:

2nd grade students explored the innovative work of Alteronce Gumby and Jane Puylagarde, two contemporary artists known for using unconventional materials to create heavily textured, three-dimensional compositions on canvas. Inspired by their approach, our students collaborated on a large-scale piece, taking turns adding layers of gesso, string, glue, and papier mâché using forks, sticks, brushes, palette knives, and their hands. Each student transformed the evolving landscape before passing it to the next artist, creating a truly collaborative artwork.

Once the textured piece dried, the students painted it in a single color, allowing light and shadow to reveal the complexity of their work. Every ridge and crevice now casts its own shadow, showcasing how dimension and collaborative creativity can transform a simple canvas into something dynamic and multisensory.
